|Project:||Developing a Consecutive Chain of Psychogeriatric Services in Kaliningrad Region|
|Date:||February 2007- February 2009|
|Donor(s):||EC Tacis Institution Building Partnership Programme (IBPP) Support to Civil Society and Local Initiatives in Russia, Vilnius Office|
The provision of services for elderly psychiatric patients in Kaliningrad district is still quite rudimentary when compared with western standards. The only institution providing specialized care for elderly psychiatric patients is the Kaliningrad Region Psychiatric Hospital, which has the only psychogeriatric department in the Kalinigrad region. The department offers basic assessment and treatment for its patients, but does not provide either outpatient care or follow-up treatment. There is additionally no support provided to the families of psychogeriatric patients, something which is of particular importance in the case of geriatric disorders. The need for improved services is underscored by the expected increase in the proportion of elderly people in the Russian Federation in the next decades.
The projects main activities include organizing home care and a day care center for elderly mentally ill patients, in order to improve inpatient care, and organize specific training programs for staff working with elderly populations in the Kaliningrad region. Among the project's most immediate aims is to improve the conditions of the Psychogeriatric department of the Kaliningrad Region Psychiatric Hospital. The project will also help create a consecutive chain of psychogeriatric services, in order to stimulate further developments in this field both in the Region and in other regions of the Russian Federation.
